The washing machine filter is directly connected to the tube which delivers water to the washing machine or dishwasher.
It is a softening filter used for cold water.

Moreover, the transparent body of the housing allows to see the level of polyphosphate media.
When the media dissolves completely, the filter should be exchanged.
